La Croix De L'ermite Crozes Hermitage 2008. Superb shiraz from Northern Rhone France. 2008 La Croix de l'Ermite "Les Châssis". Crozes Hermitage, Rhône Valley. VINEYARDS: The vineyards of Les Châssis, a plateau near the town of Tain L'Ermitage on the right bank of the Rhône river, are covered in small stones and provide particularly fragrant and powerful fruit. VINIFICATION: Traditionally made with fruit completely de-stemmed before a long cool fermentation in small open vats, pumped over by hand daily. One half of the blend is matured in barrel with minimal stirring for six months. Bottled with minimal sulphur addition and without fining or filtration. 2008 VINTAGE: The 2008 vintage in the Northern Rhône was marked by higher than average rainfall, indeed six months worth fell on the hill of Hermitage in just one day in September. Careful vineyard management was vital, along with the courage to delay harvest until the fruit was fully ripe. The wines are supple with attractive medium bodied fruit flavours that will drink well in their youth. TASTING NOTE: Unmistakably Crozes Hermitage! The nose is inviting and classically peppery supported by red berry fruit and spice. The palate is medium bodied and approachable with cherry and plum fruit flavours given definition and lift by bright natural acidity.
